A Profile in Fiscal Responsibility
Ray Bechtel is a careful man.
Although his idea of fun is trekking deep into the heart of an Amazon
rain forest, when it comes to computer technology, Ray is as serious and
meticulous an IT professional that one would ever meet.
"My office is held to a higher
standard of fiscal and technical responsibility than are most of my fellow
professionals." With 25 years information systems experience, Ray serves
as Director of Information Systems for the Orange County Comptroller's
Office, which provides fiscal support to Orange County with its multi-billion
dollar budget. "When it's your job to audit other agencies, you better
have your own house in order".
Of approximately 200 PC's on
the comptroller network, more than 140 are Axon Computers and more Axon
PC's are on order. The office utilizes four Axon file servers and two
AxonRAID units. The Comptroller's Office is evaluating an AxonRAID storage
solution for an ambitious imaging project. More than 10,000,000 official
county documents, comprising more than a terabyte of information, will
eventually be accessible to the public on the Comptroller web site, hosted
on an Axon File Server.
Mr. Bechtel is pleased with
the Axons and said, "We have torn apart a lot of Axon machines. We like
the workmanship, we like the components, and we especially like Axon's
conscientious and responsive service". His division has also achieved
time savings because of the streamlined purchasing process encouraged
by Florida Statute 413 and FAC 60E, which encourages agencies to purchase
Axons without the cumbersome bid process.
The fiscal common sense of
recycling tax dollars to employ Florida's disabled citizens, instead of
sending it forever out of state, is not lost on Ray Bechtel and the Comptroller's
office. "I believe in the program and it makes sense to give something
back to the community", he said and then smiled, ̉But only as long as
Axon continues to meet our very high technical and service standards".
